Medical electronics SMT assembly requires the PCB, components, process controls, documentation, inspection, and traceability to match the device risk and the customer’s approved quality requirements. No single checklist or certification automatically makes every assembly suitable for medical use; applicable controls depend on the product, market, design owner, and regulatory pathway.
Start with Product and Quality Requirements
Define the intended device environment, critical components, workmanship criteria, cleanliness limits, traceability, inspection level, testing, change control, record retention, and approved deviations before production. The customer or legal manufacturer remains responsible for determining applicable regulatory and product requirements.
BOM and Component Control
Use controlled manufacturer part numbers, approved alternatives, lot information, moisture-sensitivity handling, storage limits, and counterfeit-risk controls. Any proposed substitution should be reviewed for electrical, mechanical, package, lifecycle, and compliance effects before customer approval.
SMT Process Control
Solder-paste storage, stencil condition, printing, placement, reflow profiling, handling, and cleaning must be controlled against the approved process. Temperature measurements should represent the actual assembly because large copper areas, shields, fine-pitch packages, and sensitive components heat differently.
Cleanliness and Contamination
Flux residues, ionic contamination, particulates, moisture, and handling residues can affect leakage, corrosion, insulation resistance, and long-term reliability. Cleaning and cleanliness acceptance should follow the assembly materials, product environment, and agreed test method rather than a generic claim of being clean.
Inspection and Testing
Inspection can combine SPI, AOI, X-ray, visual workmanship review, electrical test, functional test, and customer-specific verification. Inspection coverage should follow package type and failure risk; hidden BGA joints, for example, cannot be fully assessed by optical inspection.
Traceability and Change Control
Link material lots, process records, inspection results, rework history, and released revisions to the production batch. Changes to components, process materials, equipment, suppliers, or test methods should follow the customer-approved change-control route.
